Working women spend at least 8 hours in the office almost daily. In order to stay fresh and clean when they are on their menstruation cycle, it is advisable to replace their used sanitary pad to a new one every 4 hours. Therefore, sanitary disposal bins or feminine hygiene units are a necessity for any workplace. 16% of women complain about a lack of feminine hygiene units while 2 in 3 people say the washroom facilities where they work are extremely/very important*. Obligations aside, providing proper sanitary bins in the cubicle also displays an employer’s sensitivity to their female employees and clients’ needs to dispose used sanitary pads discreetly and safely. It also eases concerns of contact with germs and exposure to possible blood‑borne pathogens from sanitary pads thrown into regular waste bins.

Even in this modern world, many women are still embarrassed when it comes to conversations on menstruation and everything associated with it including sanitary pads disposal. For that reason, some women may seem unaware on the methods of disposing the used sanitary pads properly. Subsequently, used pads that are flushed down the toilet may clog the drainage system, resulting in costly repairs, unscheduled maintenance calls and time-consuming cleanups. Moreover, sanitary pads or tampons that were eventually flushed down will end up in the ocean and beaches hence polluting our environment, consequential in disturbances of the ocean ecosystem.

The ideal way of disposing sanitary pads is simple. Wrapping them in paper and tossing them into a feminine hygiene unit or sanitary bin will increase hygiene level in many ways.

• Discreet and helps in reducing the foul smell emitting from the waste.
• If the unit is with the pedal or no-touch function, users would not need to touch the lid to open and dispose thus reducing cross contamination
• It reduces flying insects from infesting and populating hence preventing the spread of germs and viruses via cross contamination

“When hygiene level is low, cross contamination will increase and eventually result in employees falling sick. This in return lowers productivity, translating it back to bad business sense.” says Carol Lam, Managing Director of Rentokil Initial Malaysia.

Providing your female washroom users with a discreet and hygienic way to dispose of sanitary waste is a vital consideration for the provision of a clean and pleasant washroom environment. Disposal of the contents in the feminine hygiene units promptly is necessary as well and greater hygiene can be achieved when the units are integrated with antibacterial properties with either a pedal or no touch function.
