Students in Malaysia Sickened by Foodborne Illness

28/04/2014

salmonella, food poisoning, initial hygiene

More than 150 students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Syed Ahmad in Kuala Nerang, Malaysia, were down with foodborne illness.

The students experienced severe food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Seven of the students were admitted to the hospital while two have been discharged and the other five students are reported to be in stable condition.

Ismail Abu Taat, Kedah State Health Director said this was probably caused by Ayam Merah Masak contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. This might be due to improper food preparations by the food handlers.

Salmonella can be transmitted from inadequately cooked food, cross-contamination from pests or from person-to-person contact. Poor hygiene and sanitation in food handling can cause food contamination.

Here are some simple personal hygiene tips that food handlers can practise when handling food:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with hand soap before and after handling food.
  • Use hand sanitisers containing at least 60% alcohol to sanitise your hands.
  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
  • If you are sick with flu, it is advisable to wear surgical mask to prevent cross contamination.
